For many people in the LGBTQ community, it’s comforting to see them increasingly represented and celebrated in Hollywood. More than 30 celebrities, including actresses Janelle Monae, Jennifer Lawrence and Ellen DeGeneres, actors Amandla Stenberg and Abbi Jacobson, and actors Brendon Thorne and Ben Affleck, have spoken out publicly in 2018.
Kiyoko, a biracial singer-actress, is known to fans as a lesbian Jesus and stands for queer femininity. LGBTQ spectrum and many of the celebrities who don’t identify as heterosexual have come out of their closets. LGBT people and those who grew up on the LGBTQ spectrum, as well as celebrities who don’t identify as heterosexual, like Jennifer Lawrence.
The NY Daily News reported that she told the audience: ‘I’m here today because I’m gay. This incredible actress came out of the closet and stood in front of hundreds of people, thousands of whom were watching, standing up for herself and her family.
In April 2013, NBA star Jason Collins decided to tell the truth in his magazine: “The pages of Sports Illustrated are not a conventional place to appear. YouTuber Shane Dawson surprised his millions of fans in 2012 when he outed himself as a bisexual man in a video posted on his channel.
After years of speculation, Anderson Cooper officially came out as bisexual in an interview with the New York Times in October 2013.
Amandla Stenberg, who starred in “The Hunger Games,” came out as bisexual in a Snapchat video on January 7, 2016. Actress and singer-songwriter Jennifer Lawrence, who is a member of the LGBTQ + community, came out as Asian in an interview with the New York Times in 2019.
In a series of tweets, the star spoke about her identity, making her the first South Asian woman to openly voice her views. The star confirmed the news in another tweet, informing her fans of her sexual identity.

While some claim her sexuality is the reason she has not progressed, Nobilette said it is essential for her authenticity to be revealed.
After receiving a wave of support, Llano told Sports that his coming out was one of the biggest decisions of his life. While celebrities who share their identities and sexuality around the world are a step in the right direction, we still have plenty of room for improvement when it comes to welcoming people from the LGBTQ community. But the experience of being a part of it means as much to celebrate it as anything else.
When people in the spotlight are willing to step forward and share their stories, it’s contagious. While many public figures still use traditional media to share milestone moments, the advent of social media has restructured celebrity coming-out stories, prompting many LGBTQ stars to bypass the traditional way. In the past two years alone, a slew of celebrities, most of them young, have spoken out on social media.
Taylor Bennett took to Twitter in January 2017, and the actor took to Twitter to share the news, writing: ‘Starting the year with my new fiance @ bluehamilton.
Musician Frank Ocean posted about his sexuality on Tumblr, and although he didn’t explicitly say the words gay or bisexual, he shared a story explaining that he found out his first love was a man when he was 19.

Julianne Hough made headlines when she went public about her relationship with her partner of 10 years, actress and singer Julianna Margulies. NFL free agent Ryan Russell surprised us all when he publicly came out as bisexual in August 2019.
